West Mersea Beach
West Mersea Beach is an un-spoiled and calm beach which makes for the perfect family day out. Go crabbing off one of the jetties, play on the sand or go for a long walk whatever you get up to you’ll be sure to have a fantastic day out!
Visit Mersea Museum this summer and walk through the ages, from the Bronze Age all the way to the Platinum Jubilee. This is an educational and fascinating experience that you’re going to love.
If you’re after a great idea to entertain the kids (or adults!) on a budget, crabbing is a great idea! The causeway at West Mersea hard is the idea place to crab with specific areas marked to do this. Please take care to observe these rules if you go, as it is a working causeway for local fishermen too! Now, you can purchase special crabbing equipment from many local shops but, if you go prepared, the same result can be achieved with a length of string, a large washer and an old bucket. Use strips of bacon as bait and you’re all set. Next bit is easy, just sit on the edge, drop your line and wait. An hours fun should give you a large bucket full of crabs. When you’re done, just tip them out & watch them run back to the water. But watch those pinchers!!!
Mersea Island Skate Park
The skate park is located on the village green between the School Gardens on Barfield Road and Reymead Wood.
East Mersea– St Osyth– Brightlingsea Foot Ferry
In peak times during the summer, a regular foot ferry runs from East Mersea point, accessed on foot via Cudmore Grove Country Park. The ferry goes across to the local seaside towns of St Osyth and Brightlingsea, both great days out in themselves!! Check Brightlingsea Harbour website for updates and for information on trips to and from local events, regattas and festivals.
