High Wildfire Risk: Temporary Barbecue & Fire Pit Ban

Following a Government alert issued on Friday 14th August 2026 regarding the heightened risk of wildfires, we’ve made the decision to prohibit the use of all barbecues and fire pits across the park until further notice.

This includes gas barbecues. With the current dry spell pushing ground conditions to exceptionally dry levels, even a contained flame carries a real risk of sparking a fire that could spread quickly across the site and surrounding land. We know barbecuing is one of the best parts of a stay with us, so this isn’t a decision we’ve taken lightly — but keeping everyone on site, and the surrounding countryside, safety has to come first.

Guests are permitted to use camping cookers that are specifically designed for camping and operated safely in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. This includes portable gas camping stoves for cooking meals and boiling water.

The distinction is that these appliances provide a controlled cooking source and present a significantly lower risk than open fires or barbecues under the current conditions.

We would, however, ask that the following fire safety measures are followed at all times, particularly in light of the current wildfire risk and the restrictions we have put in place across the park:

• The cooker must be positioned on a stable, non-combustible surface off the ground.
• It must be located well away from tents, vehicles, hedges, trees, dry grass, and any other flammable materials.
• The cooker must never be left unattended while lit or while still hot following use.
• A responsible adult must supervise its use at all times.
• The area around the cooker should be kept clear of combustible items such as paper towels, packaging, camping equipment, and fuel containers.
• The cooker should only be used for the preparation of food and not for heating purposes.
• Any spare gas canisters should be stored safely and away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
• A supply of water should be readily available nearby in the event of an emergency.
• The cooker must be switched off immediately after use and allowed to cool completely before being moved or stored.

Why now?

Wildfire risk isn’t just about open flames in dry grass. Sparks from gas burners, disposable barbecues, and even fire pits with a lid can travel further than expected in dry, windy conditions, and it takes very little to ignite parched vegetation. The Government alert reflects that this risk is currently elevated across the region, not just on our site.

A few general wildfire safety reminders

• Never discard cigarettes on dry grass or vegetation — always use a proper ashtray or bin.
• Avoid parking vehicles on dry grass, as hot exhausts can ignite it.
• Glass bottles left in direct sunlight can act as a magnifying lens — please take any glass or litter with you.
• If you spot a fire or smoke anywhere on or near the site, alert a member of staff immediately and call 999.
