Staycations are all about exploring the great outdoors, and a stay at Waldegraves on Mersea Island puts you right in the middle of some of the best wildlife and natural beauty the Essex coast has to offer.
From quiet days on the beach to long walks in the countryside, time spent outdoors is some of the best quality time you can have as a family. Mersea Island, the most easterly inhabited island in the British Isles, is genuinely special for nature lovers. Take a look at the video below for a glimpse into island life.
What wildlife can you see on Mersea?Mersea is one of the best places on the Essex coast to get up close with wildlife. Dozens of bird species visit the island throughout the year, from Little Egrets and Marsh Harriers to Green Woodpeckers and Ospreys. It’s a hugely popular spot with birdwatchers, who travel from across the country to spend time at the various birding sites around the island.
Have a look at the Essex Birdwatching Society’s website for the full list of species you might see and where to find them. Pack the binoculars, you may be in for a treat.
Cudmore Grove Country ParkOne of our favourite spots on the island is Cudmore Grove, and we always recommend guests spend some time here during their stay. It’s just a ten-minute drive from us.
Spanning over 100 acres, this nature reserve is an excellent place to spot wildlife and rare bird species. There’s a wildlife hide overlooking the pond where you’ll often see wildfowl, foxes and rabbits. The low-lying grazing meadow is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and draws wading birds and ducks throughout the year.
Cudmore Grove is flat and easy to explore, with miles of walking paths circling and crossing the site. There’s also a play area for younger children to climb and let off some steam. Find out more about Cudmore Grove Country Park here.
