Christmas Markets in Essex
Everyone loves a Christmas Market! Traditionally filled with sumptuous goodies and great gift ideas, these pop up markets are a lovely way to get into the Christmas mood.
Head to Battlesbridge and the Meadow Croft Garden Centre for their German Christmas Market. Every day until December 23 their market is open between 10am and 4pm. There are more than twenty unique stalls, selling everything from ‘Wintersecco’ to German cuckoo clocks, honey candles to realistic chocolate tools.
As well as the stalls, there’s fresh food like German Bratwurst and Currywurst, piping hot mulled wine and spiced apple drinks.
In the little village Ingatestone a large Christmas Market will be popping up, featuring around 60 stalls on the High Street on December 8. The quaint village’s Christmas market has lots of stalls selling hot and cold food and gifts, plus you’ll be able to get fresh mulled wine and Prosecco well as a Christmas pudding stall and a chocolate fountain.

For a bigger scale Christmas event in Essex head to Chelmsford’s high end shopping district for the Bond Street Christmas Market, which will be held on November 28, 29 and 30 and December 1. Between 10am and 6pm daily (except on Sunday, December 1 where it will be closing early at 4pm) there will be a variety of independent market stalls offering festive gifts in a central location. Keep an eye out for mulled wine, live music and Father Christmas himself of course!
The Billericay Christmas Street Market will be on December 1 running between 11am and 5pm, with the entire high street shut for one of the biggest events in the Billericay calendar. There will be plenty of stalls to buy food and gifts at as well as lots of dressed up performers.
Christmas Fayres in Essex
The Christmas Fayre at Shenfield is on Hutton Road on Sunday, December 8. There will be swathes of stalls selling original gifts plus lots of places selling fresh and hot food to warm the Sunday chill.
The Battlesbridge Christmas Fayre is held at the Battlesbridge Antiques Centre on December 8. Between 10am and 5pm, there will be a flurry of festive activities that are sure to grab the attention of all the family. The children will enjoy the elf hunt as well as face painting and pony rides, plus there is a complete indoor festive cinema, festive craft stalls and a full-scale Santa’s grotto.
Christmas attractions in Essex
Head to Southend seafront to visit Adventure Wonderland. This amusement park will be opening its inside area of Adventure Island – Adventure Inside – on December 7, 8, 14, 15, 18 and 24 for a special ticket-only Christmas event.
For a different type of Christmas event in Essex, take a ride on Santa’s Special Train at Epping Ongar Railway. Setting off from Station Approach in Ongar throughout December you can enjoy a Christmassy ride, great for all the family.
Another station running ‘Steam with Santa’ is Colne Valley Railway in Halstead. Have great fun riding this heated steam train with Father Christmas and his elves, with every It runs December 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22 and 23 with trains will be departing every hour, starting from 10.30am and with the last trains leaving at 4.30pm.
Colchester Castle is claiming to have the most magical grotto in town! Step into an enchanted winter forest at Colchester Castle where Santa and his sleigh have arrived (until Christmas Eve at least). Meet Santa and receive a gift, then whisper your festive wish into a local oyster shell and place it on the tree.
The Christmas lights are up on Mersea Island on Friday 6th December. Follow Santa in his horse drawn sleigh down the High Street to the MICA car park where he will officially turn on Mersea’s Christmas lights. Be there for live entertainment and activities from 5pm onwards.
If you fancy working off those mince pies then join the Santa Fun Run at Castle Park in Colchester. This Christmas event in Essex will be held on Sunday 8th December 2019 between 10:00am til 3:00pm. Runners of any age can walk, jog or run 3 or 5k round beautiful Castle Park and raise funds for Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals Charity.
