Mersea Island and its surrounding area is jam-packed with events and activities during the summer making it a great place for a caravan holiday in Essex with the family.

The island itself is a great place to explore, with its small but thriving fishing port, winding creeks, nature reserves and picturesque beach. Plus, here are some of our top picks for events and things to do in Essex whilst you are on your holiday.

1. West Mersea Town Regatta

If you’re planning on caravan holiday in Essex and staying on Mersea Island itself, then the biggest event on the local calendar is the annual West Mersea Town Regatta. Highlights of the day include the greasy pole event where contestants try their balancing skills to see if they can reach the end of the pole to grab a flag – plenty of laughs guaranteed! Plus there are stalls, street food, a fair and fireworks at dusk.

2. The Essex Summer of Art

This arts festival between May and October is an event that is held across Essex. Now in its 11th year, the Essex Summer of Art promotes exciting opportunities to visit art trails, artist studios, workshops and events from Harlow to Harwich. Since 2008 the programme has supported over 8,000 artists to exhibit in 2,700 venues, making it the largest visual arts festival event in Essex.

3. Hylands Estate

If you’re looking for activities and events to keep the youngsters entertained whilst on your caravan holidays in Essex, then head to the Hylands Estate, near Chelmsford. Things to do include ‘Scrapbook Safaris’ and ‘Tuesday Toddles’, both events running throughout July and August. The Scrapbook Safaris event allows children to immerse themselves on an expedition around Hylands Estate, learning about the plants and wildlife that surround them before assembling their own scrapbook.

Within this picturesque park in Essex there are formal Victorian Gardens and ancient woodlands to explore, as well as an award winning accessible children’s adventure playground. Facilities at Hylands House include free parking and wheelchair access.

4. The National Country Show

Each September Hylands Park hosts the annual event in Essex that is The National Country Show Live. This two-day show is Chelmsford’s largest family event complete with country shopping, street food, drinks and entertainment as well as all of your traditional country show finds. Listen to talks in the Country Theatre, meet a whole range of interesting animals and have-a-go at activities – it’s a great day out for the whole family.

Looking for a more cultural thing to do in Essex? Then check out the temporary piece of artwork on the Railway Bridge in Southend, which is on display all summer 2019 until 13 October. Artist Samara Scott has created a brand new large-scale artwork, which adorns either side of the bridge’s façade in the centre of the town. Visible for a half mile along the town’s main shopping thoroughfare to the sea, the work launched on 20 July and remains on view until 13 October 2019.

It won’t be for everyone – as her work explores ‘society’s cycle of consumption and waste, together the materials create rich seductive surfaces that lure the viewer into the artist’s world of decay and excess’, but it will certainly lead to discussion!

6. Southend Planetarium

Throughout 2019 you can visit an event in Essex at the Southend Central Museum in Southend-on-Sea. Southend Planetarium offers visitors a unique experience with changing talks throughout the year, exploring the night sky. All presentations are given live; giving plenty of opportunity for any questions you may wish to ask from the knowledgeable lecturers.

7. The Little Beach Hut Company
